ARTS INTEGRATION

A Kennedy Center Arts Integration Workshop

In this 3 or 6 hour workshop, K-6 teachers learn how create musical instruments from recycled and reused materials, and then use those instruments to make connections to science and literacy.  First, participants build the instruments – such as an oboe from a straw, maracas and drums from tin cans, a guitar from a tube and fishing line – while learning the science behind how they work.  Next, the sounds of the instruments become the inspiration for writing and composing musical stories to be performed on the instruments.  No musical background required!

Available in 3 and 6 hour versions; add a second facilitator for dance+music connections. Click here for more information.

PAUL KLEE AND IMAGINATION- PAINTING WITH MUSIC, COMPOSING WITH IMAGES

This workshop explores the concept of inspiration and the creative process through the art - and music - of Bauhaus artist Paul Klee.  A talented violinist himself, Klee’s paintings are filled with allusions to dreams, poetry and music.  We’ll discover the musical elements in Klee’s work, and then play around with some ways to transform visual elements into sound.  Extending our sonic possibilities by building simple instruments from simple materials, we’ll then compose, notate and perform simple musical pieces based on Klee’s paintings – literally composing with images!

Available in 3 and 6 hour versions; add a second facilitator for dance+music connections

FROM PAGE TO STAGE: Exploring Literacy Concepts through Music and Movement (2 facilitators)

In this workshop we’ll examine how words can spring off the page and into sound and movement; and conversely, how creation of those sounds and movements can lead to awareness of the depth, power and precision of words. Husband-and-wife teaching artists Carina Piaggio and John Bertles will engage you in a sequence of simple and fun exercises to discover the connections between syllables and rhythm; create soundscapes from read-aloud stories; compose multi-media haiku, and more!  No musical or dance experience necessary.

A two-facilitator workshop; available in 3 and 6 hour versions

FEELING FRACTIONS:  Math, Movement and Music (2 facilitators)

Explore an alternate entry point to the world of mathematics! In Feeling Fractions your students will discover a new tool for understanding simple math concepts - through their bodies. Can you feel sub-division through music? Can you see fractions through dance? Husband-and-wife teaching artists Carina Piaggio and John Bertles will take you through a series of simple and fun exercises and explorations of math through the lens of interrelated art forms.  No musical or dance experience necessary!

A two-facilitator workshop; available in 3 and 6 hour versions
